ISO 9001 was first born in 1987 known as the Quality Management System (QMS) ISO 9001:1987. There are three versions of implementation options on the 1987 series is one that emphasizes the aspects of Quality Assurance, aspects of the QA and Production and Quality Assurance for Testing. The main concentration is in the final product inspection of a process (known as the final inspection) and adherence to the rules of the system procedures that must be met as a whole. (Sugeng Listyo Prabowo, 2009).

Later, in 1994, because of the need Guaranty quality not only on aspects of the final inspection, but further emphasized the need for preventive action process to avoid mistakes in the process that causes the discrepancy in the product. However, series 9001: 1994 is still adhered to a rigid system of procedures and tend to document center than the needs of organizations that are tailored to an organization's internal processes. 9001:1994 series is more focused on the manufacturing process and is very difficult to apply to small business organizations because of the many procedures that must be met. Because of this shortage, the technical committee conduct a review of existing standards until it was born the revision of ISO 9001:2000 which is the incorporation of ISO 9001, 9002, 1994 and 9003 versions. (Wawan Setyawan, 2009).

Wawan Setyawan (2009) also says that the series 9001:2000, clause 20 is no longer known mandatory, but rather on business processes that occur within the organization. So that organizations can implement the slightest ISO 9001:2000 QMS with a variety of exceptions in business processes. So dikenalah term BPM or Business Process Mapping, each organization must map its business processes and make it a major part in the company's quality manual, ISO 9001:2000 however still requires 6 procedures should be documented, that of document control procedures, control of records, Control of Non-conforming Product, Internal Audit, Corrective Action and Preventive Action, all of which can be met by any business organization.

In the next development, the ISO 9001:2008 series was born as a form of refinement of the revision in 2000. The difference between the series of ISO 9001: 2000 with ISO 9001: 2008 is significantly more emphasis on the effectiveness of the processes carried out within the organization. If the ISO 9001 series: 2000 says it should be corrective and preventive action, then the series ISO 9001: 2008 specifies that the process of corrective and preventive action taken should effectively have a positive impact on process changes that occur within the organization. Moreover, the emphasis on process control outsourcing part highlighted in the latest series of ISO 9001. (Wawan Setyawan, 2009).

Based on above exposure it can be concluded that the ISO 9001 series in its development has undergone three revisions since it was first established in 1987. The first revision occurred in 1994 which further series of ISO 9001 is often known as the Quality Management System (QMS) ISO 9001:1994. The second revision occurred in 2000 which further series of ISO 9001 is often known as the Quality Management System (QMS) ISO 9001:2000. The third revision occurred in 2008 which further series of ISO 9001 is often known as the Quality Management System (QMS) ISO 9001:2008. In general, no significant changes from the revision of the 2000 to 2008, there was no increase or reduction clause in it.
